UT Obesity Research Center

The UT Obesity Research Center is dedicated to developing interdisciplinary approaches for the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity that will decrease obesity-related complications, and help people achieve long-term maintenance of a healthy weight. The main purpose of the center is to foster collaborations and provide a mechanism for developing program projects in obesity research and place University of Tennessee faculty in a better position to be able to compete for external funding.

Community Leadership for Healthy Lifestyles Online Course set for Fall 2011
The course will focus on community-based planning to promote healthy eating and physical activity as described by the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the National Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.  Attached is an announcement with more detail.  Consider this course, if you are interested in working collaboratively on-line and with students from a variety of disciplines!

Building Healthy Communities: A workshop bringing together public administrators, policy makers, and concerned citizens
This workshop was designed to focus on how environmental factors influence a communities' nutrition and physical activity habits. During the morning session, nationally renowned experts in the fields of nutrition, active transportation, public health, and urban planning delivered keynote presentations and held a panel discussion. In the afternoon, the audience members split into breakout sessions facilitated by the conference organizers, and solutions to the problems presented by the experts were sought and recorded. Finally, at the conclusion of the conference, a panel discussion of policy-makers (including both elected and appointed officials) provided a thoughtful reflection on the process of implementing change through influencing the legislative process and enacting policies.

National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR)
announced the launch of a new, free online resource to help researchers and practitioners more easily investigate childhood obesity in America. The Catalogue of Surveillance Systems (CSS) describes in detail existing surveillance systems that collect data related to childhood obesity.
